The Diss Grammar School centenary is commemorated by Diss Museum from Wednesday 12 March. Built in 1908 as the Secondary School, DGS survived for 70 years. Plans to turn the building into a community centre came to nothing and it was demolished in 1991. The Old Dysseans have contributed to the display and have had a special preview. The museum also commemorates the 90th anniversary of the end of World War One, featuring a German trench bell picked up on the Somme battlefield by the father of a local man. Civil defence plans in the event of World War Three provide another display, using material provided by Doug Bartlett who was post controller in the 1980s. The history of the Diss Town Guide is featured, showing how local guide books have developed from Victorian times. A newly acquired, century-old collection of pictures of Thelveton estate and school will also be on show. Historical items with a touch of mystery make up a further display, including a Bronze Age dagger, a medieval brooch and an artistic re-creation of a Saxon woman's face from the evidence of her skull. The museum is open on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and all day Friday and Saturday.
