Green Man

by Basil Abbott last modified 24-June-2009 10:38

He may have gazed down on Diss, unnoticed since medieval times; but the church has a Green Man. Discovered above the south porch door, he was verified by the owner of the Green Man East Anglia website. Green Men are sculptures of a face surrounded by leaves, often sprouting from the face itself. They may symbolise the cycle of growth each Spring. Many churches feature these figures, even though they are pre-Christian.
