Concert with HM Royal Marines Training Band & SNYSB
The Diss based South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band is once again welcoming members of the training band from Her Majesty’s Royal Marines School of Music into the rural depths of Norfolk. This ‘coming together’ is unique nationally and is a coup for the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band and the town of Diss.

The training band from HM Royal Marines will hold workshops, rehearsals and a concert over the weekend of 26th/27th January with The South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band. A truly mass band of over 80 musicians will come together, which will be made up from professional musicians and young people.

The purpose of the weekend is to enable the student bandmasters from Her Majesty’s Royal Marines School of Music to experience working with and conducting a band of mixed abilities and ages. This annual event now officially forms part of a formal one-year training programme leading to an appointment as Bandmaster to one of the Royal Marines Bands. The trainee bandmasters are formally assessed on their performance. It also gives the young musicians an opportunity to play alongside experienced and professional musicians and learn new skills.

Warrant Officer Bandmaster Don Lloyd, from HM Royal Marines School of Music quoted;  “Over the years we have been very pleased with the invaluable experience gained during this event. The student bandmasters work very hard to obtain the excellent results achieved from the young musicians in this band, and although this is an enjoyable weekend there is also a great deal of hard work for everybody involved. Whilst our first priority is to rehearse the band for the concert, it also gives us the opportunity to promote the career opportunities that are available within the Royal Marines Band Service”.

Musical Director and Chairman, Mike Booty an ex Royal Marine musician, from The South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band quoted “ I am really pleased that we are now holding this unique experience in our home town of Diss and it is also an opportunity for the local people of Diss and South Norfolk to watch and listen to a talented youth Band and the future musicians of the best Military Band in the world. Once again we are pleased to welcome the student Bandmasters and musicians from the Royal Marines School of Music as it gives our young musicians an opportunity to play alongside professional musicians and be directed by future Royal Marine Bandmasters.”.

Tickets for the evening concert to be held on Sunday 27th January at Diss Corn Hall, commencing at 18.30 are £5.00 in advance or £6.00 on the door and may be purchased from Mandy Carter on 01379 854600Tickets are restricted and you are therefore advised to purchase them in advance.
