There are many other initiatives – a growing movement – doing this. Our contribution is a network of 'connected communities'.  DissConnected is the first and will serve as model for other communities to follow. Other initiatives may incorporate our organisational principles or our software (freely available) to strengthen what they are doing.

We hope that there will soon be many more, linked to form a higher level connected community, all supporting each other, as a framework for a connected world, a starting point for a peaceful, sustainable Earth.

Getting to the root of our troubles

Everyone is becoming increasingly aware that we are all interdependent. The environmental and economic problems that are beginning to hit will affect us all. The essence of a connected community is a new social structure that takes that interdependence as a starting point:

Re-inventing communities so that they work as they should:

• Connecting people for mutual benefit. NOT, everyone out for themselves,
  
• Driven by wellbeing of people and planet, NOT profit for distant companies
  
• Self-organising, with local autonomy and decision-making, NOT controlled by outsiders for their benefit.
  

• Feedback, mediation and good communication to handle conflict naturally, NOT the strong imposing their will on others.
  

The best of old and new

Connecting people for mutual benefit brings alive ancient traditions of family and community that everyone feels in their hearts. It uses the best of modern communications technology to provide an infrastructure for that connection. It builds upon modern ideas of organisational theory that provide for democracy and local autonomy without hierarchy.
