Isak Borg (Victor Sjöström) is a medical doctor and professor who is forced by nightmares, daydreams, his old age, and his impending death to re-evaluate his life while driving with his daughter-in-law from Stockholm to Lund in order to receive an honorary degree from Lund University. He meets a variety of people on the road, from Sara, a female hitcher travelling with her fiance and escort, to a quarelling married couple who remind Isak of his own life and marriage.
